Area of Science:

  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Psychology

Background:

  • Panic disorder is a debilitating condition characterized by recurrent, unexpected panic attacks.
  • Effective treatment strategies are crucial for managing panic disorder and improving patient outcomes.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of cognitive therapy versus pharmacotherapy for panic disorder.
  • To determine the most practical initial treatment approach for panic disorder.

Main Methods:

  • The study reviewed existing research evidence on panic disorder treatments.
  • Comparative analysis of cognitive therapy and pharmacotherapy (alprazolam, imipramine) outcomes.

Main Results:

  • Cognitive therapy is identified as the most effective treatment for panic disorder.
  • Alprazolam and imipramine are effective in suppressing panic disorder symptoms.
  • Approximately 50% of patients treated with alprazolam or imipramine achieve sustained wellness.

Conclusions:

  • While cognitive therapy offers the best long-term outcome for panic disorder, pharmacotherapy with alprazolam or imipramine provides a practical and effective initial treatment option.
  • Pharmacotherapy can successfully manage symptoms and lead to sustained improvement in a significant portion of patients.
