Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess the feasibility of diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) for detecting bowel inflammation in UC patients.
  • To investigate apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) value changes in inflamed bowel segments of UC patients.

Main Methods:

  • Seven UC patients undergoing total colectomy were included.
  • Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) was performed prior to surgery.
  • Histopathological examination of resected specimens determined inflammation severity.
  • Apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) values were calculated for lesions and normal tissue.

  • Mean ADC values were significantly lower in active UC lesions compared to normal colorectal tissue (p < 0.01).
