Purpose of the Study:

  • To examine the relationship between kidney function and cognitive decline in a community-based Chinese population.
  • To determine if reduced estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) predicts cognitive impairment over time.

Main Methods:

  • A prospective study of 1,351 Chinese adults aged over 40 with eGFR >30 ml/min/1.73 m².
  • Kidney function assessed by eGFR; cognitive function evaluated using the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) at baseline and 4-year follow-up.
  • Cognitive decline defined as a decrease of ≤2 points on the MMSE score.

Main Results:

  • 66 participants (5.3%) experienced incident cognitive decline over 4 years.
  • Participants with eGFR 30-59 ml/min/1.73 m² had a 2.73-fold increased odds of cognitive decline compared to those with eGFR ≥90 ml/min/1.73 m².
  • This association remained significant after adjusting for urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio.

Conclusions:

  • Kidney function, specifically eGFR, is independently associated with cognitive decline in the Chinese population.
  • The findings highlight the importance of monitoring kidney health for brain health in this demographic.
