Area of Science:

  • Otorhinolaryngology
  • Hematology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Kikuchi's necrotizing lymphadenitis is an uncommon, benign condition characterized by lymph node inflammation.
  • It typically presents with cervical lymphadenopathy, often accompanied by systemic symptoms like fever and fatigue.
  • Distinguishing it from malignant lymphoma is crucial for appropriate patient management.

Observation:

  • Three patients with Kikuchi's necrotizing lymphadenitis without granulocytic infiltration were observed.
  • All presented with cervical lymphadenopathy and neutropenia.
  • Clinical and histopathological differentiation from malignant lymphoma proved challenging.

Findings:

  • Two patients experienced spontaneous recovery within three months.

Related Experiment Videos

  • One patient showed initial improvement but was lost to follow-up.
  • The absence of granulocytic infiltration was a notable feature in these cases.
  • Implications:

    • This case series highlights the diagnostic challenges of Kikuchi's disease, particularly its mimicry of lymphoma.
    • The findings suggest that Kikuchi's disease, even with neutropenia, may have a favorable prognosis with spontaneous resolution.
    • Further research is warranted to elucidate the specific clinicopathological features and optimal diagnostic strategies for Kikuchi's necrotizing lymphadenitis.
