Summary

Quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) analysis reveals distinct brain activity differences in fibromyalgia (FM) patients compared to healthy individuals. These qEEG abnormalities correlate with pain severity, suggesting a potential clinical tool for assessing brain function in FM.

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Clinical Neurophysiology

Background:

  • Fibromyalgia (FM) is increasingly understood to involve central nervous system dysfunction.
  • Recent imaging studies support abnormal central mechanisms contributing to FM pain.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To statistically compare quantitative electroencephalogram (qEEG) measures between 85 FM patients and age/gender-matched controls.
  • To investigate the relationship between qEEG findings, pain severity, and medication use in FM.

Main Methods:

  • EEG data from 85 FM patients and healthy controls were analyzed using NeuroGuide 2.0 software.
  • Analyses included spectral absolute power, relative power, and coherence, compared against a normative database.
  • Clinical data from the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ) and pain pressure thresholds were collected.

Main Results:

  • FM patients exhibited reduced frontal EEG spectral absolute power in low- to mid-frequency bands.
  • Elevated high-frequency relative power in frontal/central sites and widespread frontal hypocoherence were observed in FM patients.
  • A significant negative correlation was found between pain severity and the magnitude of EEG abnormalities.

Conclusions:

  • Quantitative EEG analysis reveals significant differences in brain function between FM patients and healthy controls.
  • qEEG demonstrates potential as a clinically useful tool for assessing brain function in fibromyalgia.
  • EEG abnormalities in FM correlate with pain severity, not medication use.
