Self-Report Tests of Personality01:22

Self-Report Tests of Personality

Self-report inventories are objective personality assessments that use multiple-choice items or numbered scales, typically ranging from 1 (strongly disagree) to 5 (strongly agree). They are often called Likert scales after Rensis Likert. These inventories are widely used due to their ease of administration and cost-effectiveness. One of the most prominent examples is the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI), initially developed in the 1940s to assess abnormal personality traits.
Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.

Reliability and Validity01:29

Reliability and Validity

Reliability and validity are two important considerations that must be made with any type of data collection. Reliability refers to the ability to consistently produce a given result. In the context of psychological research, this would mean that any instruments or tools used to collect data do so in consistent, reproducible ways.
Measures of Intelligence01:29

Measures of Intelligence

Psychologists measure intelligence by using standardized tests that produce a score known as the intelligence quotient or IQ. To understand IQ tests, it's important to recognize the key principles behind their construction: validity, reliability, and standardization.
Validity refers to how well a test measures what it claims to measure. An intelligence test should accurately assess intelligence rather than another characteristic, like anxiety. Criterion validity is one way to evaluate this; it...
Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model01:29

Self-Evaluation Maintenance Model

The Self-Evaluation Maintenance (SEM) model offers a psychological framework to understand how individuals’ self-esteem is influenced by the achievements of others, particularly those with whom they share close personal bonds. The SEM model operates when personal rather than social identity guides individuals. Central to this model is the notion that individuals have an inherent desire to preserve a favorable self-image, which is continuously shaped by interpersonal comparisons and...

Area of Science:

  • Nursing Education
  • Clinical Assessment
  • Psychometric Evaluation

Background:

  • Undergraduate nursing programs utilize Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation (OSCE) for competence assessment.
  • The Novice Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation Tool is used to evaluate student performance in early clinical courses.
  • Established reliability and validity are crucial for the assessment tool's effectiveness in quality and safety education.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the psychometric properties of the Novice Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation Tool.
  • To determine the reliability and validity of the OSCE tool used in undergraduate nursing.
  • To assess the tool's suitability for evaluating quality and safety education components.

Main Methods:

  • Psychometric testing was performed on a sample of 565 nursing students over three years (2002-2004).
  • Exploratory factor analysis and reliability testing were conducted on the 25-item tool.
  • Principal axis factoring with multiple rotations (oblimin, promax) was employed.

Main Results:

  • Factor analysis identified two key factors: Safety (Factor 1) and Anticipation (Factor 2).
  • Spearman-Brown reliability coefficients were 0.93 for Safety and 0.77 for Anticipation.
  • Cronbach's alpha values were 0.94 for Safety and 0.71 for Anticipation, indicating adequate internal consistency.

Conclusions:

  • The Novice Objective Structured Clinical Evaluation Tool exhibits adequate construct validity and reliability.
  • Further research should include test-retest analysis to assess stability.
  • Evaluating interrater reliability is recommended to assess equivalency dimensions and confirm the tool's merit for quality and safety education assessment.
