Summary

This study on resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (FPDs) found a 34.9% debonding failure rate in acid-etched metal FPDs. Maxillary FPDs with two retainers showed better longevity than mandibular ones.

Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Prosthodontics
  • Clinical Dentistry

Background:

  • Resin-bonded fixed partial dentures (FPDs) offer a conservative treatment option.
  • Understanding the long-term clinical performance and failure modes of FPDs is crucial for patient care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the longevity of resin-bonded FPDs.
  • To identify factors influencing the longevity and failure rates of these restorations.

Main Methods:

  • A clinical recall program assessed 49 resin-bonded FPDs.
  • Evaluations included acid-etched metal, combination, and composite resin pontic FPDs.
  • Failure rates and service length were recorded and analyzed.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • 15 out of 43 acid-etched metal FPDs debonded, resulting in a 34.9% failure rate.
  • The average service life for all evaluated FPDs was 47.3 months.
  • Maxillary FPDs and those with two retainers had significantly lower failure rates.

Conclusions:

  • Acid-etched metal resin-bonded FPDs exhibit a notable failure rate due to debondment.
  • Restoration placement (maxillary vs. mandibular) and number of retainers impact FPD longevity.
  • Further clinical significance and management strategies warrant discussion.
