Area of Science:

  • Gerontology
  • Dental Public Health
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • A common misconception exists that older adults inherently have poor oral health.
  • Understanding factors influencing oral health concern and care-seeking in long-term care residents is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To identify associations between variables and oral health concern in long-term care residents.
  • To evaluate the effectiveness of multivariate models in predicting oral health concern.

Main Methods:

  • A random sample of 653 residents from 41 Vancouver long-term care facilities were examined and interviewed.
  • Bivariate analysis (chi-square tests) and multivariate classification techniques (discriminant analysis, logistic regression, CART) were employed.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • 53% of residents reported oral problems, and 85% desired treatment.
  • Oral complaints correlated with recent dental visits, dissatisfaction with prior treatment, and being female.
  • Desire for treatment linked to recent service use and lower cost concern.
  • Service utilization associated with younger age, having natural teeth, and higher socioeconomic status.

Conclusions:

  • Significant disparities exist in oral health concern and service utilization among long-term care residents.
  • Multivariate models show potential for predicting oral health concerns.
  • Targeted interventions may be needed to improve dental care access for vulnerable older adults.
