    Summary

Cystosarcoma phyllodes in young women is rarely malignant. Benign tumors can be treated with local excision, while malignant forms may require simple mastectomy, with no recurrences observed in this study.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Surgical Pathology

    Background:

    • Cystosarcoma phyllodes is a rare breast tumor.
    • This study focuses on cases in women under 25.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze treatment outcomes for cystosarcoma phyllodes in young women.
    • To determine optimal surgical approaches based on tumor type (benign vs. malignant).

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective review of eight cases reported to the Swedish Cancer Registry (1960-1969).
    • Analysis of treatment modalities including local excision, simple mastectomy, and radical mastectomy.
    • Evaluation of tumor recurrence and metastasis based on follow-up data.

    Main Results:

    • Seven of eight cases (87.5%) were benign; one (12.5%) was malignant.
    • The malignant case was successfully treated with simple mastectomy and radiation.
    • Benign tumors treated with local excision (n=6) or simple mastectomy (n=1) showed no recurrence over an average 10-year follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Local excision is adequate for benign cystosarcoma phyllodes.
    • Simple mastectomy is recommended for malignant cystosarcoma phyllodes.
    • Radical mastectomy is reserved for cases with pectoral fascia invasion; axillary lymph node metastasis is rare.
