Summary

A physical activity tracker worn on the trunk showed reliable sleep duration estimation in adolescents, comparable to wrist-worn sleep devices. This finding supports using physical activity monitors for sleep studies.

Area of Science:

  • Sleep science
  • Biomedical engineering
  • Epidemiology

Background:

  • Accurate sleep estimation is crucial for epidemiological research.
  • Actigraphy is a common method for sleep assessment.
  • Existing actigraphy devices are primarily designed for wrist placement.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the feasibility of using a trunk-worn physical activity device for sleep estimation.
  • To compare the accuracy of a physical activity device with standard wrist-worn actigraphy devices for sleep analysis.

Main Methods:

  • Thirty adolescent participants underwent overnight polysomnography (PSG) and wore three wrist-worn actigraphy devices: Sleepwatch, Actiwatch, and Actical.
  • The Actical device is designed for trunk placement to measure physical activity.
  • Sleep-wake parameters, including total sleep time (TST) and sleep efficiency (SE), were estimated from all devices and compared to PSG using correlation and Bland-Altman analyses.

Main Results:

  • All wrist devices, including the Actical, demonstrated strong correlations with PSG for total sleep time (TST) estimation.
  • The Actical showed high correlations with other wrist devices for TST (r=0.796 with Sleepwatch, r=0.955 with Actiwatch).
  • While Actical correlated well with Actiwatch for sleep efficiency (SE), its correlation with PSG for SE was weak (r=0.348).

Conclusions:

  • A trunk-worn physical activity device can reliably estimate sleep duration in adolescents.
  • This device shows comparable reliability to wrist-worn devices for measuring sleep duration.
  • Further research may explore the utility of physical activity devices for comprehensive sleep assessment.
