Summary

Mixed flora in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) results does not indicate pneumonia. In critically ill patients, mixed flora alone, without a pathogenic organism above diagnostic thresholds, does not warrant antibiotic therapy.

    • Antibiotic therapy should not be initiated or continued solely based on mixed flora findings in this patient population.
    • This finding supports a more conservative approach to antibiotic use in mechanically ventilated trauma patients.
