Both high-intensity and low-intensity exercise training significantly improve aerobic function in older adults. Training equally enhanced maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and lactate threshold (LT) in both groups compared to controls.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of high-intensity (HI) versus low-intensity (LI) training on aerobic function in elderly subjects.
  • To compare improvements in maximal aerobic power (VO2max) and lactate threshold (LT) between training groups.

Main Methods:

  • Elderly subjects (65-75 yr) were randomized into HI or LI training groups.
  • Training involved 4 sessions/week for 8 weeks, 30 min/session.
  • Aerobic function (VO2max, LT) was assessed before and after training using incremental and submaximal exercise tests.
