LC Circuits01:21

LC Circuits

An LC circuit consists of an inductor and a capacitor, either in series or parallel. Consider a charged capacitor connected with an inductor in series. Before the switch is closed, all the energy of the circuit is stored in the electric field of the capacitor. When the switch is closed, the capacitor begins to discharge, producing a current in the circuit. The current, in turn, creates a magnetic field in the inductor. Because of the induced emf in the inductor, the current cannot change...

    Summary

Integrated acousto-optic (AO) heterodyne modules were developed for radio frequency (RF) signal processing. These devices enable precise measurement of RF signal amplitude, frequency, phase, and angle of arrival.

    Area of Science:

    • Photonics and Acousto-Optics
    • Integrated Optics
    • RF Signal Processing

    Background:

    • Conventional acousto-optic Bragg cells face limitations in performance for wideband RF signal analysis.
    • Integrated photonic devices offer miniaturization and enhanced functionality for signal processing applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To realize and demonstrate integrated acousto-optic (AO) device modules for advanced RF signal processing.
    • To develop AO heterodyne modules capable of channelized detection and interferometric spectral analysis.
    • To evaluate the performance of these integrated modules for RF signal parameter measurement.

    Main Methods:

    • Fabrication of integrated AO modules combining a wideband AO Bragg cell, ion-milled Bragg diffraction grating, and waveguide lens on a Y-cut LiNbO(3) substrate.

  • Implementation of optical heterodyning techniques within the integrated modules.
  • Testing of single-unit and dual-unit modules for RF signal analysis, including dynamic range and bandwidth measurements.
  • Main Results:

    • Single-unit modules achieved a 51 dB spurious-free dynamic range for single-tone signals and 40 dB for two-tone third-order signals.
    • Demonstrated a bandwidth of 205 MHz centered at 350 MHz.
    • Dual-unit modules successfully measured the angle of arrival of RF signals.

    Conclusions:

    • The developed integrated AO heterodyne modules offer significantly improved performance for RF signal processing compared to conventional AO Bragg cells.
    • These modules enable channelized detection of RF signal amplitude, frequency, and phase.
    • The technology is suitable for advanced RF spectral analysis and angle-of-arrival measurement.
