  • Pulmonary involvement is a recognized but less characterized complication of canine leptospirosis.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of pulmonary abnormalities in dogs diagnosed with leptospirosis.
  • To correlate clinical and radiological findings with patient outcomes in leptospirosis cases with lung involvement.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of medical records for 50 dogs diagnosed with leptospirosis.
  • Diagnosis confirmed via serology (microscopic agglutination test), PCR, and histopathology.
  • Dogs categorized based on presence and severity of clinical/radiological pulmonary signs and respiratory distress.

Main Results:

  • Pulmonary abnormalities were detected in 70% of dogs with leptospirosis.
  • Radiological changes were present in 35 dogs, with 31 experiencing pulmonary distress.
  • Higher grades of respiratory distress correlated with increased euthanasia rates due to respiratory failure; other deaths resulted from renal failure or sepsis.

  • Early recognition and management of lung complications are vital for improving survival in leptospirosis patients.
