Background:

Anticipatory stress in humans involves the limbic-hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and cortisol release.
Stress response conditioning is crucial for adaptation, but its presence in early infancy is unclear.
Understanding infant stress anticipation is key to early development research.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate if six-month-old infants exhibit anticipatory stress responses.
To determine if infants can develop conditioned stress responses in an attachment context.
To explore the neural circuitry underlying infant stress anticipation.

Main Methods:

Infants were re-exposed to a context where a prior parent-infant relationship disruption occurred.
Stress hormone (cortisol) levels were measured to assess the stress response.
A control group was used for comparison to isolate the anticipatory stress effect.

Main Results:

Six-month-old infants demonstrated an anticipatory stress response upon re-entering the context.
Infant stress response (cortisol elevation) was higher in the stress group than the control group.
The anticipatory response was observed even though the direct stressor was less intense than the initial event.

Conclusions:

Human infants at six months possess the capacity for anticipatory stress responses.
These responses are based on learned expectations of parental behavior within specific contexts.
This finding highlights early-developing predictive processing in infant stress regulation.
