Summary

Carbon dioxide (CO2) laser application in orthopaedic surgery showed comparable bone healing to traditional saws. However, the laser group experienced delayed healing due to inert bone fragments, warranting further investigation.

Area of Science:

  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Biomedical Engineering
  • Surgical Technology

Background:

  • Limited literature exists on CO2 laser use in orthopaedics.
  • No studies have reported on the effects of CO2 lasers on bone healing.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the effects of CO2 laser osteotomies on bone healing in a rabbit model.
  • To compare bone healing following osteotomies created by a CO2 laser versus an oscillating saw.

Main Methods:

  • Osteotomies were created in rabbits using either an oscillating saw or a CO2 laser.
  • Bone healing was assessed and compared between the two groups.

Main Results:

  • Bone healing was comparable between the oscillating saw and CO2 laser groups.
  • The CO2 laser group exhibited delayed bone healing.
  • Inert-appearing bone fragments in the laser group appeared to inhibit the healing process.

Conclusions:

  • CO2 laser application in orthopaedic osteotomies resulted in delayed bone healing.
  • Further research is needed to understand the inhibitory mechanism of CO2 laser-induced bone fragments.
  • Investigate the potential for lasers to enhance bone healing under specific conditions.
