    • To identify distinct patterns of risk factors for cancer, alcohol-related diseases, and coronary heart disease.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 7935 middle-aged men was screened and followed for 3.5-8 years.
    • Causes of death were determined through necropsy for 83% of the 218 deceased individuals.
    • Statistical analysis, including logistic regression, was used to identify risk factors.

    • Cancer (28%), alcohol-related diseases (25%), and coronary heart disease (23%) were the leading causes of premature death.
    • Distinct risk factor patterns were identified for each cause: smoking, cholesterol, triglycerides, and blood pressure for heart disease; gamma-glutamyl transferase, alcoholism screening scores, cholesterol, and creatinine for alcohol-related deaths; and urate and cholesterol for cancer.
    • Multivariate analysis confirmed the predictive power of certain factors for coronary heart disease and alcohol-related deaths.

    Conclusions:

    • Malignant diseases and alcohol-related conditions are as prominent as cardiovascular diseases in causing premature death.
    • Distinct risk factor patterns for these conditions are potentially avoidable.
    • These patterns can be utilized for predicting premature death risk and informing preventive measures.
