Summary

Extraskeletal chondromas, cartilaginous tumors outside joints, present diagnostic challenges. Despite concerning histology, these benign tumors rarely metastasize and can be managed with surgical resection.

Background:

  • Extraskeletal chondromas are rare cartilaginous tumors presenting in three main forms: synovial chondromatosis, para-articular lesions, and soft tissue masses.
  • Histological differentiation between these variants is not possible, and some may exhibit features mimicking malignancy.

Observation:

  • Para-articular and soft tissue chondromas are rare and can display immature cartilage, potentially leading to misdiagnosis as chondrosarcoma.
  • Computerized tomography (CT) was utilized in the diagnosis of a para-articular chondroma, representing a novel application in literature.
  • A soft tissue chondroma in the upper arm is exceptionally rare, with only one prior reported case.

Findings:

  • Extraskeletal chondromas, regardless of worrisome histologic features, do not metastasize.
