Area of Science:

  • Dental Materials Science
  • Biomaterials Research
  • Tooth Preparation

Background:

  • The smear layer, a layer of debris on dentinal surfaces, can impede bonding of dental materials.
  • Effective smear layer removal is crucial for successful dental restorations.
  • Zionomer Conditioner is a novel agent designed for use with light-cured materials.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of Zionomer Conditioner in removing the smear layer.
  • To determine the optimal application duration for Zionomer Conditioner.
  • To assess the effect of Zionomer Conditioner on dentinal tubule exposure.

Main Methods:

  • Human premolars were prepared to create a standardized smear layer.
  • Specimens were treated with Zionomer Conditioner for varying durations (5, 10, 20, 30 seconds) or distilled water (control).
  • Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to examine smear layer removal and tubule morphology.

Main Results:

  • Application of Zionomer Conditioner for 5 seconds removed most of the smear layer.
  • Complete smear layer removal was achieved with 10 seconds or more of application.
  • Longer application times (20-30 seconds) completely removed the smear layer and widened tubule orifices.

Conclusions:

  • Zionomer Conditioner is highly effective in removing the smear layer from prepared dentin.
  • Short application times (as little as 5 seconds) are sufficient for significant smear layer removal.
  • Optimal smear layer removal and potential enhancement of dentinal tubule exposure are achieved with 10 seconds or more of application.
