Background:

  • Silicosis is a serious lung disease caused by inhaling silica dust.
  • Immunoglobulins are proteins produced by the immune system.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the role of serum immunoglobulin levels in the diagnosis and progression of silicosis.
  • To compare immunoglobulin levels in silica-exposed workers with non-exposed individuals.

Main Methods:

  • Serum immunoglobulin (IgG and IgM) levels were measured in 130 slate pencil workers exposed to silica dust.
  • A control group of 50 non-exposed individuals was included for comparison.
  • Levels were analyzed in relation to dust exposure duration and silicosis severity.

Main Results:

  • Significantly higher levels of immunoglobulins (IgG and IgM) were observed in silica-exposed workers compared to controls.
  • A positive correlation was found between the duration of silica dust exposure and serum IgG and IgM levels.
  • The highest mean levels of IgG and IgM were detected in workers with conglomerate silicosis.

Conclusions:

  • Elevated serum immunoglobulin levels are associated with silica dust exposure.
  • While indicative of exposure, immunoglobulin levels may have limited utility in determining the progression of silicosis.
  • Further research is needed to establish the definitive role of immunoglobulins in silicosis management.
