Summary

Cat scratch disease, a common bacterial infection, can rarely cause kidney inflammation (glomerulonephritis). This case study shows the kidney condition resolved on its own as the infection cleared.

Background:

  • Cat scratch disease (CSD) is typically a benign, self-limiting illness.
  • Systemic CSD complications are uncommon, usually involving the central nervous system, bone, liver, or spleen.

Observation:

  • A patient presented with symptoms of cat scratch disease and glomerulonephritis.
  • The kidney condition resolved spontaneously alongside the CSD symptoms.

Findings:

  • This is the first reported case of glomerulonephritis associated with cat scratch disease.
  • Immunopathologic and ultrastructural analyses suggest an immune-mediated, post-infectious mechanism for the glomerulonephritis.

Implications:

  • This finding expands the spectrum of known CSD complications.
  • Highlights the potential for immune-mediated kidney disease following CSD.
  • Suggests that glomerulonephritis in the context of CSD may not require specific renal treatment if CSD resolves.
