Abstract:
The evolutionarily conserved YidC/Oxa1p/Alb3 family of proteins plays important roles in the membrane biogenesis in bacteria, mitochondria, and chloroplasts. The members in this family function as novel membrane protein insertases, chaperones, and assembly factors for transmembrane proteins, including energy transduction complexes localized in the bacterial and mitochondrial inner membrane, and in the chloroplast thylakoid membrane. In this review, we will present recent progress with this class of proteins in membrane protein biogenesis and discuss the structure/function relationships.
