Background:

Doppler sonography has shown success in antepartal fetal diagnosis.
Its utility during labor warrants investigation for real-time fetal monitoring.

Purpose of the Study:

To assess the application of Doppler sonography during labor.
To evaluate changes in fetal carotid artery blood flow parameters in relation to uterine contractions and labor progression.

Main Methods:

Doppler measurements of the internal fetal carotid artery were performed on 7 patients with normal pregnancies.
Simultaneous continuous cardiotocography (CTG) was recorded.
The S/D ratio was compared between uterine contraction and relaxation phases, and between labor onset and end.

Main Results:

The S/D ratio was significantly higher during uterine contraction phases compared to contraction-free phases.
A statistically significant increase in the S/D ratio was observed from the onset to the end of labor.
These findings indicate increased intravascular resistance in the fetal carotid artery due to cephalic pressure during labor.

Conclusions:

Doppler sonography is a viable method for monitoring fetal hemodynamics during labor.
Increased fetal carotid artery resistance during labor is associated with cephalic pressure.
This method provides valuable insights into fetal response to labor stress.
