Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis01:24

Nursing Process for Patient and Caregiver Teaching I: Assessment and Diagnosis

The nursing process provides a clinical decision-making framework for patients and families to establish and implement a personalized care plan. Since part of the nurse's duties is to teach patients, the steps of the nursing process are the most effective way to approach instruction. The nursing process and the teaching-learning process are inextricably linked.
It is critical to determine the patient's learning needs during the assessment. Determination of learning needs compounds data from the...
Nursing Assessment01:29

Nursing Assessment

The two sources for collecting information are primary and secondary. After gathering information, interpretation and validation help to complete the data. The purpose of assessment is to establish data with the initial information, to interpret data about the patient's perceived needs and health problems, and to respond to these problems identified.
The nurse collects all aspects of the patient's health in the initial assessment, establishing priorities for ongoing focused assessments and...
Nursing Evaluation01:15

Nursing Evaluation

The evaluation stage signals the end of the nursing process. The nurse gathers evaluative data to assess whether or not the patient has attained the expected results. Whereas the nurse collects data in the nursing assessment to identify the patient's health concerns, the evaluation stage data determines if the indicated health issues are resolved. Evaluative data collection includes two sections: the data acquired to evaluate patient outcomes and the time criteria for data collection.
Section...

Interdisciplinary Care: The Health Care Team-I

An interdisciplinary team includes many healthcare professionals working together and utilizing their skills, knowledge, and expertise to provide holistic and quality patient care.
Physicians
The physician's primary responsibility is to diagnose illness and direct the medical or surgical treatment of the condition. The authority to admit patients to a healthcare agency or institution and practice care within that setting is granted to physicians by the healthcare agency or institution itself.

Physical Therapist
A physical therapist (PT) aims to restore function or prevent additional impairment in a patient following an injury or disease. Massage, heat, cold, water, sonar waves, exercises, and electrical stimulation are some treatments used by PTs to treat...

Summary

Pediatric faculty show positive attitudes but have knowledge gaps and low self-efficacy in caring for underserved populations. Enhancing faculty development is crucial for effective physician training in this area.

Area of Science:

  • Medical Education
  • Pediatrics
  • Health Equity

Background:

  • Role models are vital for training physicians to serve underserved populations.
  • Pediatric faculty's preparedness is essential for effective care delivery.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To assess pediatric faculty's knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, skills, and precepting behaviors concerning the care of underserved populations.
  • Identify specific areas for faculty development to improve care for vulnerable children.

Main Methods:

  • A survey was administered to pediatric faculty to evaluate their knowledge, attitudes, self-efficacy, skills, and precepting behaviors.
  • Data analysis focused on identifying deficits and strengths in faculty preparedness.

Main Results:

  • 65% of faculty responded, revealing knowledge gaps regarding resources for the underserved.
  • Faculty expressed positive attitudes and self-efficacy, though self-efficacy was lowest in accessing community resources.
  • While most faculty performed relevant skills, less than 50% precepted these skills, particularly resource navigation, with students.

Conclusions:

  • Specific knowledge deficits and low self-efficacy in accessing resources present opportunities for faculty development.
  • Low rates of student precepting in key skill areas indicate a need for targeted educational interventions.
