Summary

High selenium intake may reduce bladder cancer risk, particularly in women. Further research is needed to confirm this protective effect of selenium against bladder cancer.

    • Potential sources of heterogeneity included sex, sample type, smoking status, and study design.

    Conclusions:

    • Selenium may have a protective effect against bladder cancer, notably in women, possibly due to gender-specific differences in selenium metabolism.
    • Heterogeneity was largely attributed to variations in biological sample types used for selenium measurement and small study sizes.
    • Results suggest a beneficial role of high selenium intake for bladder cancer risk, warranting further investigation in larger studies.
