The Pineal Gland01:02

The Pineal Gland

The pineal gland, a diminutive endocrine structure named for its pinecone-shaped appearance, is situated atop the third ventricle within the diencephalon region of the forebrain. This gland, composed of secretory cells known as pinealocytes arranged in compact cords and clusters around dense particles of calcium salts, plays a pivotal role in hormonal regulation.
The primary secretion of the pineal gland is the hormone melatonin, derived from serotonin. The concentration of melatonin in the...

Summary

This study reports a rare case of pineal germinoma in an adult, diagnosed via cerebrospinal fluid cytology. This highlights an alternative diagnostic method for this uncommon central nervous system germinoma.

Area of Science:

  • Neuro-oncology
  • Pathology

Background:

  • Germinomas are gonadal neoplasms, infrequently found extragonadally in midline structures.
  • Pineal gland germinomas are exceptionally rare in adults, with most cases diagnosed in adolescence.

Observation:

  • This report details a unique case of a pineal germinoma diagnosed in an adult patient.
  • Diagnosis was achieved through cerebrospinal fluid cytology, an atypical method for this tumor.

Findings:

  • Cerebrospinal fluid cytology can be a viable diagnostic tool for adult pineal germinomas.
  • Literature review from 1983-2009 on pineal germinomas was conducted using PubMed and OVID.

Implications:

  • This case expands the diagnostic possibilities for adult pineal germinomas.
  • Highlights the importance of considering less common diagnostic pathways in rare oncological presentations.
