Antagonism to neuronal cystine uptake a factor in neuronal damage by glutamate
Nutrition Reviews

Abstract:
Glutamate neurotoxicity has been attributed to excessive excitatory action of this amino acid and related analogues. Recent studies using in-vitro neuronal cell culture techniques have implicated antagonism to neuronal cystine uptake and subsequent cellular glutathione depletion as factors in neuronal cytotoxicity caused by glutamate.
