Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the relationship between nurses' clinical experience and the calibration of self-confidence and judgment accuracy in critical event risk assessment.

Main Methods:

  • 103 nursing students and 34 experienced nurses assessed 25 real-case risk vignettes.
  • Judgments on critical event risk and confidence ratings (0-100) were recorded.
  • Confidence calibration methodology was used to analyze data.

Main Results:

  • Experienced nurses were more confident but not more accurate than students.
  • Students tended towards under-confidence; experienced nurses showed over-confidence.
  • Calibration and discrimination accuracy were similar between groups.

Conclusions:

  • Nurses exhibit systematic over/under-confidence biases in risk assessment.
  • Experienced nurses were not better calibrated than students.
  • Student under-confidence was offset by experienced nurses' over-confidence.
