Immunogold Electron Microscopy01:20

Immunogold Electron Microscopy

Immunoelectron microscopy utilizes immunogold labeling of endogenous proteins with specific antibodies to detect and localize these proteins in cells and tissues. The procedure provides insights into the distribution and quantification of protein under different stimulation conditions offering clues about their functions. Conjugating highly electron-dense gold particles with primary or secondary antibodies allow antigen detection on and within cells, with high resolution and specificity.
Jaundice01:25

Jaundice

Jaundice, or icterus, is the yellow discoloration of the skin, sclerae, and mucous membranes. It happens when plasma bilirubin levels rise above 2.5-3 mg/dL, leading to bilirubin deposition in tissue.Bilirubin is a byproduct of hemoglobin degradation. In macrophages, hemoglobin breaks down into globin and heme. Globin is converted into amino acids, while heme is turned into biliverdin by heme oxygenase, which is then reduced to unconjugated bilirubin by biliverdin reductase.Unconjugated...

Area of Science:

  • Neuroscience
  • Neurolinguistics
  • History of Medicine

Background:

  • Ludwig Lichtheim, a prominent aphasiologist, is renowned for his "Lichtheim's House" diagram.
  • His seminal 1885 paper on aphasia, though influential, gained fame for its schema over its theoretical contributions to aphasia syndromes.

Discussion:

  • This paper presents a translation of Lichtheim's memoirs detailing his perspectives on his aphasia research.
  • It examines the inclusion of the conceptual center in his model and Wernicke's reaction to it.
  • The enduring impact of Lichtheim's work, despite his personal reservations, is critically analyzed.

Key Insights:

  • Lichtheim's "House" diagram became more famous than his theoretical proposals on aphasia syndromes.
  • The conceptual center's role in Lichtheim's model and its reception by Wernicke are explored.
  • The paper questions the surprising longevity and impact of Lichtheim's contribution to aphasiology.

Outlook:

  • Further research into the historical context of aphasiology models.
  • Comparative analysis of historical aphasiology models and contemporary understanding.
  • Re-evaluation of foundational contributions in neurolinguistics and cognitive neuroscience.
