Background:

  • Pinguecula is a common degenerative condition of the conjunctiva.
  • Previous research has not extensively evaluated pinguecula severity in contact lens wearers.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the association between age and pinguecula incidence and severity in contact lens (CL) wearers.
  • To compare pinguecula severity between CL wearers and non-wearers.

Main Methods:

  • A cross-sectional study involving 600 CL wearers (hard CLs and soft CLs) and 579 non-wearers, aged 10-60 years.
  • Data collected included age, gender, medical and ocular history, and pinguecula grade at nasal and temporal locations.

Main Results:

  • Pinguecula grade increased with age in both CL wearers and non-wearers.
  • CL wearers showed higher temporal pinguecula grades compared to non-wearers (P=0.01907).
  • Hard CL wearers had significantly higher pinguecula grades than soft CL wearers at both nasal and temporal conjunctiva (P<0.00001).

Conclusions:

  • Contact lens use is identified as a significant risk factor for developing pinguecula.
  • This study provides novel insights into pinguecula severity in a large cohort of contact lens users.
