Summary

Low-cost trocar catheter nephrostomy offers a safe and effective alternative for upper urinary tract obstruction. This ultrasonography-guided procedure demonstrates high success rates and is suitable for developing countries.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the efficacy of a low-cost trocar catheter as a substitute for conventional percutaneous nephrostomy techniques.
  • To assess the safety and cost-effectiveness of ultrasonography-guided trocar catheter nephrostomy.

Main Methods:

  • Percutaneous nephrostomy using a trocar-catheter drainage set was performed under local anesthesia and ultrasonography guidance.
  • The procedure was conducted in 126 patients, involving 179 total procedures.
  • A stab wound was made through the skin and muscle layer for trocar-catheter insertion.

  • Primary technical success rate was 94%.
  • Major complication rate was 1.6%, with a 11% minor complication rate.
