Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the skeletal status of individuals with primary psychotic disorders to the general population using bone ultrasound.
  • Investigate the association between schizophrenia and bone health.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative ultrasound of the heel (broadband ultrasound attenuation and speed of sound) was measured in individuals with schizophrenia, other psychoses, and population controls.
  • Psychosis diagnoses were confirmed using the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition, Text Revision criteria.
  • Risk factors for bone fragility and serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D levels were assessed.

Main Results:

  • Women with schizophrenia and men with affective psychosis exhibited significantly lower bone ultrasound values compared to controls.
  • Individuals with schizophrenia had significantly lower vitamin D levels.
  • Schizophrenia independently predicted poor skeletal status in women, even after accounting for other risk factors.

Conclusions:

  • Schizophrenia is independently associated with diminished skeletal status in women.
  • Bone health should be monitored in women diagnosed with schizophrenia.
