  • Internal Medicine
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Acute gastroenteritis and food poisoning are common reasons for hospital admission.
  • Accurate diagnosis is essential for effective patient management.

Observation:

  • A 2-year study of 594 patients admitted with suspected acute gastroenteritis or food poisoning was conducted.
  • Gastrointestinal symptoms were present in 175 (29%) patients due to non-gastrointestinal infection causes.

Findings:

  • Non-infective gastrointestinal disease was diagnosed in 90 patients.
  • Systemic infections accounted for 50 cases.
  • Systemic diseases were identified in 35 patients.

Implications:

Related Experiment Videos

  • Gastrointestinal symptoms can mimic infectious causes, necessitating broader differential diagnoses.
  • Conditions like malaria, septicemia, and appendicitis may present with similar symptoms.
  • Clinicians should maintain a high index of suspicion for non-gastrointestinal causes in patients with apparent gastroenteritis.
