Purpose of the Study:

  • To describe the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, surgical therapy, and prognosis of 13 patients with small bowel tumors.
  • To highlight the challenges in managing small bowel tumors in an emergency setting.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective review of 13 consecutive surgical cases of small bowel tumors treated between 1996 and 2008.
  • Analysis of clinical and radiological charts from hospital databases.

Main Results:

  • Intestinal obstruction (7 cases) and perforation (5 cases) were the most frequent presentations.
  • Adenocarcinoma (4 cases) was the most common histologic type, followed by small bowel sarcoma (3 cases) and non-Hodgkin lymphoma (2 cases).
  • Other diagnoses included carcinoid tumor, small bowel angioleiomyoma, Brunner's gland adenoma, and inflammatory pseudotumor.

Conclusions:

  • Small bowel tumors often present with non-specific symptoms, necessitating improved diagnostic accuracy.
  • Prognosis is influenced by the timing and type of surgical intervention, as well as the biological behavior of the tumor cells.
