Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis develops independently of NOD2 variants

Genetic analysis revealed that NOD2 gene variants, linked to Crohn's disease, do not increase the risk of Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis (HAEC) in children. Further research is needed to understand HAEC pathogenesis.

- Ten children (19.2%) with HD carried at least one NOD2 variant, compared to 11.2% of controls and 45.4% of the CD cohort.
- Seven children (13.5%) with HD developed HAEC, but none of these patients carried any of the tested NOD2 variants.
Conclusions:
- The study concludes that NOD2 variants associated with Crohn's disease do not appear to predispose children to Hirschsprung-associated enterocolitis.
- The molecular mechanisms underlying HAEC pathogenesis require further investigation due to limited current data.
