Area of Science:

  • Neurology
  • Psychiatry
  • Clinical Medicine

Background:

  • New daily persistent headache (NDPH) is a primary chronic daily headache.
  • NDPH is generally considered difficult to treat.
  • Unlike migraine, NDPH has not been extensively studied for psychiatric comorbidities.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the potential association between NDPH and psychiatric conditions, specifically panic disorder.
  • To explore the efficacy of simultaneous treatment for NDPH and panic disorder.

Main Methods:

  • A case series of nine patients diagnosed with both NDPH and panic disorder was reviewed.
  • Patients received treatment for both their headache and panic disorder.

Main Results:

  • Six out of nine patients (66%) experienced good or excellent treatment responses.
  • The findings suggest a potential link between NDPH and panic disorder.

Conclusions:

  • The spectrum of anxiety disorders, particularly panic disorder, should be considered in the clinical evaluation of NDPH patients.
  • Simultaneous treatment of NDPH and panic disorder may lead to favorable clinical outcomes.
