Coping with triplets: perspectives of parents during the first four years

Over the last several decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of triplets that are successfully conceived and delivered. With these increased numbers, there is a need for social workers to better understand the experiences of higher order multiple-birth parents. With the use of a qualitative approach, this study focuses on seven interviews obtained from a sample of parents with triplets ages four years or younger. The themes that emerged from the parents included confusion over high-risk pregnancy, learning to manage three babies, gathering support and creating community, adjusting relationships and responsibilities, and opportunities to strengthen triplet families. The results of the study have implications for social workers seeking to assist with the unique needs and experiences of these families.
