Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in learning styles among undergraduate pre-registration nursing students over their course of study.
  • To identify preferred learning styles and their relationship with student demographics and academic performance.

Main Methods:

  • A longitudinal study design was employed, administering the Honey and Mumford Learning Styles Questionnaire.
  • Data collected from students in their first (n=202) and final (n=166) years, with matched pairs (n=58) analyzed.
  • Statistical analyses examined differences in learning styles between years and correlations with age and academic achievement.

Main Results:

  • The 'dual learning' category was most common in the first year (35%), while 'no dominant style' increased in the final year (53%).
  • The 'reflector' style was preferred by a majority in both first (69%) and final (57%) years.
  • Significant differences in learning styles were observed between study years, with improvements in total learning style scores. A relationship existed between learning styles and age, but not academic achievement.

Conclusions:

  • Nursing student learning styles evolve significantly throughout their undergraduate program.
  • Nurse educators must recognize and adapt to diverse and changing learning styles.
  • Implementing varied teaching and assessment strategies is essential to cultivate all learning styles and maximize student potential.
