Background:

  • Understanding factors affecting fetal growth and maternal health in PE is crucial.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare maternal and cord plasma nerve growth factor (NGF) levels between preeclamptic (PE) and normotensive (NT) women.
  • To investigate the association of NGF levels with blood pressure and infant size (birth weight).
  • To explore differences in NGF regulation in PE mothers delivering low birth weight (LBW) babies.

Main Methods:

  • Maternal plasma and cord blood samples were collected from 86 PE and 105 NT women.
  • Nerve growth factor (NGF) levels were quantified in plasma samples.
  • Statistical analyses were performed to compare NGF levels and assess associations with clinical parameters.

Main Results:

  • Maternal plasma NGF levels were significantly reduced in the PE group compared to the NT group (p<0.05).
  • NGF levels were lower in PE mothers delivering low birth weight (LBW) babies compared to NT mothers delivering LBW babies.
  • Maternal NGF levels showed a negative association with blood pressure in PE mothers (p=0.029).
  • Cord NGF levels were negatively associated with birth weight in the normotensive group (p=0.026).

Conclusions:

  • Nerve growth factor (NGF) levels are differentially regulated in preeclamptic pregnancies, particularly in those delivering LBW infants.
  • Reduced NGF may be associated with increased blood pressure and altered infant growth in preeclampsia.
  • Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms and long-term implications of NGF in PE and infant neurodevelopment.
