Neurodermatitis significantly impacts women's sexual function, with lower scores in desire, arousal, orgasm, and satisfaction. Early evaluation of sexual health in neurodermatitis patients can improve their quality of life.
Area of Science:
- Dermatology
- Psychosomatic Medicine
- Sexual Medicine
Background:
- Neurodermatitis is a chronic skin condition impacting psychosocial well-being and quality of life.
- Associated psychological issues include depression, anxiety, and sleep disturbances.
- Sexual dysfunction in women with systemic diseases is an emerging area of research.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate and evaluate sexual function in female patients diagnosed with neurodermatitis.
- To compare sexual function metrics between neurodermatitis patients and a healthy control group.
Main Methods:
- Study included 89 women: 43 with neurodermatitis and 46 controls.
- Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI) assessed quality of life.
- Female Sexual Function Index (FSFI) evaluated sexual function; individuals with psychiatric disorders or on antidepressants were excluded.
Main Results:
- Neurodermatitis patients reported significantly lower overall FSFI scores compared to controls (22.76 vs. 28.83, P = .001).
- Specific FSFI domains including desire, arousal, lubrication, orgasm, and satisfaction were significantly impaired in patients (P = .001).
- Pain domain scores showed a non-significant trend towards lower scores in patients (P = .073).
Conclusions:
- Neurodermatitis is associated with significant sexual dysfunction in women.
- Comprehensive evaluation of sexual function is recommended for neurodermatitis patients.
- Addressing sexual health can contribute to improving the overall quality of life for these patients.
