Tea tree oil attenuates experimental contact dermatitis

Purpose of the Study:

• To compare the efficacy of traditional topical agents with a moderate-potency corticosteroid.
• To evaluate treatments for experimental contact dermatitis and contact urticaria.

Main Methods:

• Tested ichthammol, zinc oxide, camphor, levomenthol, tea tree oil, and clobetasone butyrate.
• Used experimental models for allergic contact dermatitis (nickel), irritant contact dermatitis (benzalkonium chloride), and immediate reactions (histamine, benzoic acid).

Conclusions:

• Tea tree oil demonstrates superior anti-eczematic properties compared to zinc oxide and clobetasone butyrate.
• Clobetasone butyrate is more effective than ichthammol and zinc oxide for treating urticarial reactions.
