Background:

  • Muscle fatigue is a complex physiological response to exercise.
  • Electromyography (EMG) is a valuable tool for assessing muscle function.
  • Median power frequency (MPF) is a common EMG spectral analysis parameter used to detect muscle fatigue.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate changes in calf muscle EMG median power frequency during and after exhausting treadmill exercise.
  • To determine if MPF shifts during dynamic exercise are indicative of local muscle fatigue.

Main Methods:

  • Subjects performed an exhausting uphill treadmill run (average endurance 1.5 min).
  • EMG median power frequency of calf muscles (soleus, gastrocnemius medialis, gastrocnemius lateralis) was recorded during the run.
  • Isometric contractions were performed before, immediately after, and at 1-minute intervals for 10 minutes post-exercise to measure post-exercise recovery of MPF.

Main Results:

  • Calf muscle MPF declined by over 10% during the treadmill run.
  • Immediately post-exercise, isometric MPF decreased by <5% for soleus and >10% for gastrocnemius muscles.
  • Isometric MPF returned to pre-exercise levels within 10 minutes after the run.

Conclusions:

  • The shift of EMG median power frequency to lower frequencies during dynamic exercise suggests local muscle fatigue in the calf muscles.
  • Calf muscles, particularly gastrocnemius, show significant fatigue during short, intense exercise.
  • Recovery of muscle function, as indicated by MPF, is relatively rapid within 10 minutes post-exercise.
