Area of Science:

  • Reproductive Biology
  • Animal Science
  • Cryotechnology

Background:

  • Boar semen cryopreservation has historically faced challenges due to ejaculate characteristics and complex technology, hindering commercial use.
  • The widespread adoption of liquid semen for pig artificial insemination (AI) has spurred interest in improving cryopreservation techniques.
  • Previous cryopreservation methods for boar semen were cumbersome and not commercially viable.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To highlight advancements in boar semen cryopreservation.
  • To present a novel approach for commercial boar semen cryopreservation.
  • To address the limitations of previous boar semen cryopreservation technologies.

Main Methods:

  • Utilizing specific portions of the sperm-rich fraction of boar ejaculate.
  • Cryopreserving the sperm-peak portion (P1) of the ejaculate.
  • Employing the remaining ejaculated spermatozoa for parallel applications.

Main Results:

  • The proposed method effectively utilizes fractions of the boar ejaculate for cryopreservation.
  • Cryopreservation of the sperm-peak portion (P1) is demonstrated as a key component.
  • Parallel utilization of the rest of the ejaculate is integrated into the protocol.

Conclusions:

  • Recent laboratory advances provide a suitable commercial alternative for boar semen cryopreservation.
  • This approach optimizes the use of boar ejaculates, overcoming previous technological barriers.
  • The method facilitates the routine use of cryopreserved boar semen for AI.
