Language serves as a bridge between ideas and communication, influencing how individuals perceive and interact with the world. Psychologists have long debated whether language shapes thought or vice versa. Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if observing gestures improves verb retrieval in aphasic patients.
  • To determine if this modality promotes long-lasting recovery.
  • To explore the interaction between action-motor representation and language.

Main Methods:

  • Six aphasic participants with verb retrieval deficits underwent intensive rehabilitation.
  • Three procedures were used: action observation, action observation and execution, and action observation and meaningless movement.
  • Training involved three daily sessions over two weeks, with follow-up testing.

Main Results:

  • Four participants with lexical-phonological disturbances showed significant verb retrieval improvement.
  • Improvement was observed with "action observation" and "action observation and execution" procedures.
  • Long-term recovery was noted two months post-treatment.
