[The treatment of Peyronie's disease]

The paper considers results of conservative and operative treatment of Peyronie's disease in 128 patients of 23 to 60 years of age. The patients were assigned to 3 groups according to severity of clinical symptoms. Efficacy of conservative treatment was best in group 1, worse in group 2 and poor in group 3 patients. Satisfactory short-term sexual performance was reported by 71 patients (55.4%). However, long-term efficacy was seen only in 32 of 62 patients. A lack of it required various operations in 62 patients. Follow-up examination (2 to 15 years) was done in 107 patients. A good or fair outcome allowing sexual activity was seen in 59 men (55.1%). Functional outcome was found to be poor in 48 men (44.9%). The outcome was best in patients with intracavernous shafts. The analysis of long-term outcome indicates a need for newer, more efficient treatment modalities.
