Summary

Famotidine, a histamine H2 antagonist, did not significantly alter hemodynamic parameters in stable, critically ill patients. This study found no significant differences compared to a saline placebo, suggesting its safety for hemodynamic stability in this population.

Area of Science:

  • Critical Care Medicine
  • Pharmacology
  • Gastroenterology

Background:

  • Histamine H2 antagonists are frequently used for stress ulcer prophylaxis in intensive care units.
  • Understanding the hemodynamic effects of these medications is crucial for critically ill patients.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the impact of famotidine on hemodynamic parameters in stable, critically ill patients.
  • To compare the hemodynamic effects of famotidine with a placebo (NaCl 0.9%).

Main Methods:

  • Double-blind, placebo-controlled study design.
  • Inclusion of 11 stable, critically ill patients.
  • Hemodynamic parameters were assessed before and after famotidine or placebo infusion.
  • Repeated-measures ANOVA was used for statistical analysis.

Related Experiment Videos

Main Results:

  • Famotidine exhibited no significant effect on baseline hemodynamic measurements.
  • No significant differences in hemodynamic values were observed after famotidine infusion compared to NaCl 0.9% placebo.
  • Statistical analysis confirmed p > 0.05 for all hemodynamic comparisons.

Conclusions:

  • Famotidine administration does not appear to significantly affect hemodynamic parameters in stable, critically ill patients.
  • The findings support the use of famotidine for stress ulcer prophylaxis without causing significant hemodynamic compromise.
  • Further research may explore effects in more unstable patient populations.
