Area of Science:

  • Pulmonary Medicine
  • Thoracic Surgery
  • Oncology

Background:

  • A 68-year-old male presented with a two-month history of hemoptysis.
  • Imaging revealed a 5 cm mass in the right pulmonary hilum, indicative of lung cancer.

Observation:

  • Endoscopic biopsy confirmed adenocarcinoma of the middle lobe.
  • Surgical exploration showed tumor invasion into other lobes and the pericardium, necessitating a right pneumonectomy.

Findings:

  • The patient developed pulmonary thromboembolism on the 10th postoperative day.
  • Pulmonary scintigraphy indicated significant hypoperfusion in the left lung, a critical finding post-pneumonectomy.

Implications:

  • Pulmonary thromboembolism poses a severe risk, particularly in patients with single-lung function.
