    Summary

    Infection with Marek's disease virus (MDV) in chickens, regardless of cholesterol levels, induced atherosclerosis. Uninfected chickens, even with high cholesterol, did not develop these arterial lesions.

    Background:

    • Atherosclerosis is a significant health concern in humans.
    • Herpesviruses are widespread in human populations.
    • The role of viral infections in atherosclerosis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the impact of Marek's disease virus (MDV) infection on atherosclerosis development in chickens.
    • To examine the influence of dietary lipid and cholesterol levels on MDV-induced atherosclerosis.

    Main Methods:

    • Four groups of chickens were used: infected with MDV (Groups I & II) and uninfected controls (Groups III & IV).
    • Groups I & III received low-lipid diets; Groups II & IV received cholesterol-supplemented diets.
    • Gross and microscopic examination of arterial lesions was performed.

    Main Results:

    • Infected chickens (Groups I & II), both normocholesterolemic and hypercholesterolemic, exhibited significant atherosclerotic lesions in major arteries.
    • Uninfected chickens (Groups III & IV), regardless of diet, showed no grossly visible atherosclerotic lesions.
    • Microscopic analysis revealed occlusive fibromuscular intimal thickening resembling human atherosclerosis in infected birds.

    Conclusions:

    • MDV infection is a significant factor in the development of atherosclerosis in chickens.
    • Dietary cholesterol does not induce atherosclerosis in the absence of MDV infection.
    • These findings suggest viral infections, similar to MDV, may play a role in human arteriosclerosis etiology.
