Background:

  • Lichen planus is an inflammatory condition affecting skin and mucous membranes.
  • Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a significant global health concern.
  • Previous studies have suggested a potential association between lichen planus and HCV.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the seroprevalence of hepatitis C virus antibodies in patients diagnosed with lichen planus.
  • To explore the relationship between lichen planus and HCV infection in the Indian population.

Main Methods:

  • A cohort of 75 patients with confirmed lichen planus was recruited.
  • Hepatitis C virus antibody testing was performed on all participants.
  • Prevalence data was compared with existing epidemiological data for HCV in India.

Main Results:

  • Only 2 out of 75 patients (2.66%) tested positive for hepatitis C virus antibodies.
  • The observed HCV antibody prevalence in lichen planus patients was comparable to the general population in India (1.5%–2.2%).

Conclusions:

  • The study found no significant association between lichen planus and hepatitis C virus infection in the studied cohort.
  • Hepatitis C virus infection does not appear to be a major risk factor for developing lichen planus in this population.
