Phase Contrast and Differential Interference Contrast Microscopy

Phase-Contrast Microscopes
In-phase-contrast microscopes, interference between light directly passing through a cell and light refracted by cellular components is used to create high-contrast, high-resolution images without staining. It is the oldest and simplest type of microscope that creates an image by altering the wavelengths of light rays passing through the specimen. Altered wavelength paths are created using an annular stop in the condenser. The annular stop produces a hollow cone of...

    Summary

We developed erasable, nonvolatile mirror holograms using phase-change materials for high diffraction efficiency. This technology enables direct recording of computer-generated holograms with optical disk technology.

    Area of Science:

    • Holography
    • Materials Science
    • Optical Engineering

    Background:

    • Phase-change materials (PCMs) exhibit significant refractive index differences between amorphous and crystalline states.
    • These properties are advantageous for optical data storage and holographic applications.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To propose and demonstrate mirror hologram recording using a PCM.
    • To optimize multilayer structures for high diffraction efficiency.
    • To investigate the feasibility of direct recording of computer-generated holograms.

    Main Methods:

    • Simulation of multilayer structures to determine optimal film thicknesses for diffraction efficiency.
    • Experimental recording of mirror holograms using a germanium tellurium alloy PCM.
    • Directly writing Lee-type computer-generated holograms using optical disk technology.
